Spooky season is upon us! Cinegirl’s top Halloween watches this year 🎃
We’re saying goodbye to summer! And whether you’re a ‘thank god that’s over’ kind of person or you’re already missing cocktails on the beach, there’s one thing to thank autumn for: the great spooky films and TV series that are always guaranteed to hit our screens. We’ve rounded up the best creepy, quirky, and blanket-reaching watches for you to get both snuggly and scared in equal measure.
Fresh
In Mimi Cave’s directorial debut, Fresh follows a young woman (Daisy Edgar-Jones) who starts dating a seemingly nice guy she meets in a grocery store (Sebastian Stan). But it soon becomes clear that he isn’t what he seems. You’ll initially think this is a sweet rom-com, but it soon becomes very clear that Fresh is something much, much darker. We watched this chilling film back in January and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Just don’t watch it while eating – seriously.
When and where? It’s already out on Disney+
Wednesday
Fans of the Addams Family will be excited about this one: a series dedicated entirely to our favourite evil child with plaits, Wednesday Addams. Tim Burton’s comedy-horror series sees Wednesday repeatedly getting expelled from different schools (what’s she like?) and being sent to an old boarding school full of outcasts and secrets. It’s giving Serena vibes, and we’re excited to see Jenna Ortega in this iconic role.
When and where? Netflix, October (official release date TBC).
Wendell & Wilde
If ‘Nope’ didn’t give you enough of your Jordan Peele fix this year – have no fear! He’s back and has reunited with old sketch partner Keegan-Michael Key in this stop motion film that follows the adventures of two devious demon brothers. We love everything to do with this pair and can’t wait to see what hilarious mischief their characters get up to.
When and where? Netflix, October 28th. Just in time for Halloween.
The Midnight Club
Fans of The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor will be pleased to hear that Mike Flanagan has another horror film series up his sleeve. The Midnight Club takes us inside a hospice for terminally ill teenagers who make a pact to contact one another from beyond the grave when the first one dies. If it’s anything like its predecessors, we’re expecting chilling and complex relationships, long scenes that keep us on the edge of our seat and… well, ghosts. Surely?
When and where? Netflix, October 7th.
Stranger Things Season 4
Our favourite kiddos are back! There’s probably not much we can say about Stranger Things Season 4 that you haven’t already heard – but if you’re yet to venture back into the upside down, we highly recommend doing so. Particular highlights include new weirdo on the block Eddie Munsen, the potential rekindling of Steve and Nancy (Stancy?), and Joyce being, well, Joyce. Love you, Winona.
When and where? All episodes are already on Netflix. Be warned: they’re long.
Don’t Worry Darling
Our verdict isn’t out on Olivia Wilde’s psychological thriller, as it’s yet to hit the cinemas, but we’re not sure what’s scarier: the plot of this film or all the crazy press drama that’s been surrounding it. Set in the 1950s, the film follows a married couple (Florence Pugh and Harry Styles) who move to an idyllic new town to soon learn that it’s far from perfect… It’s all pretty intriguing, but anything starring Pugh is always a yes from us.
When and where? Cinemas, 23rd September (a perfect start to spooky season).
Archive 81
Archive 81 is a series that follows an archivist who’s hired to restore a collection of old tapes. Sounds normal enough, right? Less so when creepy monsters start threatening to emerge from the TV screen. Our humble archivist finds himself watching a documentary maker who enters an old building full of creepy secrets which may or may not connect to his own family. It’s a bone-chilling watch that’s well worth it – if you can handle the suspense.
When and where? All episodes are already available on Netflix. A great Halloween binge.
Hocus Pocus 2
If you’re less about being scared and more about laughing at witches with big teeth, you’ll be pleased to hear that the Sanderson sisters are returning to our screens in Hocus Pocus 2! Much like the OG cult classic, the plot will see the three witches wreaking havoc after being summoned to modern day Salem. But this time there’s an added bonus: legend Hannah Waddingham has joined the cast. Come, we fly!
When and where? Disney+, September 30th
