Cinegirl’s hottest must-see summer films
Hurrah! Cinema doors are open again! The past year has been so lacking in new films that we’ve all re-watched Bridsemaids one too many times (OK, I know that’s not physically possible) and are desperate for some fresh films, a bucket of popcorn and a Tango ice blast. But, now that the new films are coming in hot and fast, what’s coming up that’s worth watching? Here are our top picks.
A Quiet Place Part II
Posters for this silent sequel have been scattered around for over a year, and I’ve been desperate to see if it holds a candle to the first. Luckily, it does. John Kransinski has done it again with so little sound that I don’t know what’s more anxiety inducing – weird blind aliens or noisily digging into your popcorn. Extra fun if you watch it in 4DX.
Raya and the Last Dragon
This one has been available on Disney+ for a while now, but you can still see it in the cinema if you’re quick. And trust me, you should. Raya is Disney’s first Southeast Asian princess, and she’s surrounded by a badass female crew voiced by Awkwafina, Sandra Oh and Gemma Chan. Can it get put in a bowl, please, because I’d like to gobble it right up.
In the Heights
Set to be the big hit of summer 2020, In the Heights has finally taken to our screens and brought us what we all need right now – cheerful musical realness. It’s the film version of Lin Manuel Miranda’s first Broadway musical, and it’ll have you sashaying all the way home - promise. Hopefully it’ll finally get the Hamilton soundtrack out of my head, too.
Respect
Speaking of music, this one hasn’t hit the UK screens yet but it’s expected to do so in a big way. With Jennifer Hudson in the lead role, Respect follows Aretha Franklin’s journey to international musical stardom, with appearances from legends such as Mary J. Blige and Titus Burgess. Am I excited? Just a little bit…
Black Widow
Simmer down Marvel fans, the time has finally come for Black Widow to get her own film. This is set to be a massive hit with all the conspiracies, explosions and red-haired realness we expect from Scar-Jo, Florence Pugh and Rachel Weisz. Coming to our screens in July, you’ve got plenty of time to re-watch every Marvel film in anticipation (probably).
Free Guy
OK, we’ve all seen plenty of Ryan Reynolds sci-fi comedies – but this one’s different. It has Jodie Comer in it. Dramatic pause. Set in a video game that’s rapidly about to shut down, Free Guy promises Wreck it Ralph meets Killing Eve with all the fun and excitement of the Deadpool franchise. Let’s hope it meets up to the hype!
