This year Ruby Phelan (Writer-Director) and Cheri Darbon (Producer) became the Activists in Residence at The Feminist Centre for Racial Justice.
Their film ‘The Woman in the Wardrobe’ is an intimately epic tale of hope against the backdrop of destruction. The film follows Nadiya, a woman who finds sanctuary inside her family wardrobe, whilst giving birth to her daughter.'
Alongside their narrative film, they’ve been working with the UNFPA, in order to gather aid and incite action led conversation around women’s birthing conditions in war zones.
“My mother is an NHS midwife with over fourty years experience supporting women bearing new life. I’ve been brought up in a feminist household where women’s reproductive rights were at the forefront of my growth. My mothers passion for her profession, and my past experience working alongside her as a Maternity Care Assistant, has shaped the bedrock of my latest on-screen collaboration with the FCRJ. The ongoing global conflict has deeply affected women’s maternal survival and the heart wrenching statistics led me to write this highly intimate screenplay whilst in a shroud of hopelessness. As Activists in Residence we aim to give an autonomous voice to the birthing experience on screen and carve an avenue for narrative cinema to call for direct action.”
Ruby Phelan.
“The UNFPA provides life-saving support to pregnant women in crises around the world, and we will be partnering with them to announce our fundraiser in the coming weeks. At a time when we all feel so powerless it’s important to remember our humanity - small actions can go a long way. Let's keep reminding each other of that.”
Cheri Darbon.
