Feminism

Our society has evolved so much in the past few decades, in the sense that more people have finally opened their minds to allow the world to become more inclusive. History shows that we have indeed achieved some progress in society regarding equality, justice and freedom of choice. In honour of International Women’s Day this month, I’d like to share my insights on the challenging theme of feminism. What is the true definition of feminism and why do so many people have a false perception of the term?

Women in Jazz: A Celebration of the Past, Present & Future - At the Barbican Library

On December 31st, an exhibition closed at the Barbican Library called “Women in Jazz: A Celebration of the Past, Present and Future.” It was a small, but concentrated look at the few women, specifically British instrumentalists, who made waves in the jazz scene beginning in the 1920s and through to present day. Luckily the exhibit didn’t just talk about Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holliday, but unfortunately, you most likely won’t recognise many of the other names.

Enhancing your immunity through gut health

With the chill of winter around us also comes the winter coughs, colds, sore throats, the dreaded flu virus that changes every year, and that feeling of just being under the weather in our health. Many of us seem to pick up every virus or bug going around, and can feel sick of being sick, while annoyingly others never seem to fall ill. So why is this?

The Favourite review: A gripping period drama with women at the centre, or just plain bonkers?

So, what did you think of The Favourite?” my aunt asks me over the hum of restaurant chatter. I have found that, since becoming a ‘filmy person’, a sense of doom prickles over me whenever I’m asked that question. Normally, I deliver some vaguely comprehensible opinion, and it’s over. But The Favourite is, well, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, and therefore Difficult.

BAFTA Nominations 2019: Where are the Female Directors?

The BAFTA Nominations of 2019 can indeed be considered a celebration of successful women in the film industry. The brilliant comedy drama The Favourite has received 12 nominations and includes a female-driven cast with the actresses Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone. The plot is equally female-centric and represents female relationships as well as the challenges women have to face in order to fight for their livelihoods in a man’s world.

Resolutions that last past January

With the frantic December chaos of Christmas parties, present shopping, challenging work hours, completing projects before the holidays, and the tug-of-war between seeing family and friends, we often hit the end of December feeling frazzled and like we could spend the New Year in bed with the covers pulled over our heads.

Maja Jensen

Approximately eight years ago, Maja Jensen moved to London from a little village in Denmark. It is on a drizzling Saturday morning in London that I meet Maja at a coffeeshop inside a central, hip photography gallery. My voice memo is on. Coffees are ready. She’s going to tell me about her job working as a Grip.

Five things I Learnt From Running a Crowdfunding Campaign

A few years ago I ran a successful crowdfunding campaign through the Australian crowdfunding platform, Pozible, for my comedy web series, Freemales. If anyone has looked into running a crowdfunding campaign then they’d have likely come across the usual tips and tricks ie: Set a realistic goal, have a great pitch video etc... and while those are extremely useful and worth looking into, I want to share 5 things that I learnt while crowdfunding that are also worth keeping in mind.
